Introducción Puede existir el monometalismo plata o el monometalismo oro. La tendencia histórica ha sido pasar del bimetalismo al monometalismo, y del monometalismo plata al monometalismo oro. La plata como único metal imperó durante el s. XIX en muchos países (Alemania, España, Rusia y la mayoría de los Estados americanos), pero fue abandonada progresivamente. Gran Bretaña, en 1819, fue el primer país en adoptar el monometalismo oro. (V. Bimetalismo.)
